The Canadian Grand Prix joins the ever-growing list of Formula One events to be postponed due to the recent COVID-19 global pandemic. It’s hoped that the race can be held at a later date.
This is the third time the event has been absent from the F1 calendar since F1 started racing at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in 1982. The event was cancelled in 1987 as the event organizers failed to complete circuit upgrades before the scheduled race weekend and then again in 2009 due to contract negotiation issues with the sport’s management.
“We have been working closely with our friends at the Canadian Grand Prix over the past few weeks and support them in taking this necessary decision to ensure the safety of fans and the F1 community,” explained F1 CEO Chase Carey. “We always look forward to travelling to the incredible city of Montreal and while we will all have to wait a bit longer, we will put on a great show when we arrive later this year.”
