Ferrari is currently looking into the possibility of entering the IndyCar Series as early as 2022 amid concerns of Formula One’s upcoming budget cap.
It’s no secret that Ferrari, one of Formula One’s largest teams, has been against the budget cap that is set to be introduced in 2021. The new cap will limit team spending to $145m, which will gradually be reduced to $135m by 2023. The budget cap could leave many Ferrari team employees out of a job.
“Ferrari feels a lot of social responsibility towards its employees and we want to be sure that for each of them there will be a workspace in the future,” Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto explained during an interview on Sky Sports Italia.
Unlike Formula One, it’s unlikely that Ferrari would be able to manufacture their own chassis, seeing as Dallara has been the sport’s sole chassis provider since 2009. There’s no indication that IndyCar is interested in changing that.
However, Ferrari may be able to join Chevrolet and Honda as a third engine supplier. This would allow Ferrari to sell engines to up to one-third of the teams.
It’s unclear whether or not a move to IndyCar would mean that the historic Italian team will be leaving Formula One, as speculated by some fans. In fact, Binotto’s statements suggest otherwise.
