Valtteri Bottas has been penalized for his late race collision with the Red Bull of Daniel Ricciardo. The penalty does not impact Bottas’ race result. The stewards opted not to penalize Bottas for his late race contact with Sebastian Vettel.
The stewards have added 10 seconds onto Bottas’ race time and handed him 2 penalty points on his license for his collision with Ricciardo at the first corner in the closing laps of the Hungarian Grand Prix. With 23 seconds separating Bottas from Pierre Gasly, the penalty doesn’t change the race results.
The incident in question occurred while Bottas was running in P4 with a damaged front wing. Ricciardo attempted to overtake the Finn on the outside of the first corner. However, Bottas’ front wing had been damaged in a previous collision with the Ferrari of Sebastian Vettel in the second corner, which caused Bottas to understeer through the corner. He ran wide and made heavy contact with the sidepod of the Red Bull.
Both drivers continued the race and Bottas gave the position to Ricciardo on the final lap of the race in the first sector. However, the stewards felt that it was a penalty-worthy incident.
As for the original incident between Sebastian Vettel and Valtteri Bottas, the stewards dismissed the incident without penalty. This incident occurred just a lap earlier when Vettel overtook Bottas on the outside of turn two. In that incident, Vettel carried the racing line, cutting off Bottas slightly. Bottas collided with the rear of the Ferrari and damaged the front wing.
Even if a penalty had been applied to Bottas for this collision, the results would have remained unchanged due to the large gap between P5 and P6.
