The organizers for the Monaco Grand Prix are reportedly planning to defy the request of Liberty Media by featuring grid girls in the 2018 event. The practice was recently removed ahead of the 2018 season, replaced by a Grid Kids program instead. However, that won’t stop Monaco.
Liberty Media decided over the winter that the practice of using grid girls, although it was a long-standing tradition, no longer aligned with the views of modern day society. The plan to remove grid girls was set in motion, much to the displeasure of many fans and drivers.
However, this isn’t going to stop the Monaco Grand Prix, which will reportedly still feature grid girls. To get around the ban, the girls will not be holding the grid markers as they had done in the past, but they will still be present on the grid for the TV cameras.
Lewis Hamilton showed his apparent support for the return of the grid girls ahead of the Bahrain Grand Prix, screenshotting a headline announcing that Monaco plans to use grid girls with the caption “Thank you Jesus”. This post has since been deleted from his social media accounts.
Monaco is not alone in its quest to revive the grid girls. Both the Russian Grand Prix and Singapore Grand Prix are looking into alternative options for grid girls at their races in September.
