It’s that time of the week again: time for us to look at the past teams that made an exit from the sport of Formula One, having scored no points. This week, we remember Lyncar.
Lyncar was a motorsport constructor created by Martin Slater. After gaining experience producing his own cars for some junior racing series, Slater was hired as a designer for the Lola, Brabham and March teams. Slater later designed a car for the British Formula Atlantic Championship which was driven by John Nicholson. The car won the 1973 and 1974 championship titles.
Following the success in the series, Nicholson asked Slater to make him a Formula One chassis for some of the races. Nicholson entered the car under the name Pinch Plant Limited, the name of his own business, and entered it into the 1974 British Grand Prix. His first attempt didn’t go to plan, failing to qualify for the race. Juggled running his business while also entering in some non-championship events with the car.
In 1975, Nicholson once again entered into the British Grand Prix, this time making it to the grid. Starting from the last place on the grid, Nicholson one of the many drivers that crashed out of the race as a result of the massive hail storm that hit the circuit with a few laps remaining in the race. Having completed enough the race distance, he was still classified in P17.
Emilio de Villota later purchased and updated the car to race it in the newly created Shellsport International Series.
Points are a difficult thing to obtain in Formula One. In this weekly series, we will look back the past teams who gave it their all, but fell short.
