Renault had two driver lineups in 2017, both of which we are going to compare. First we need to look at the performance difference between Nico Hülkenberg and Jolyon Palmer. Then we need to compare Nico Hülkenberg and Carlos Sainz.
First, let’s compare Hülkenberg and Palmer. It’s not that shocking to confirm that Hülkenberg massively out performed Palmer in 2017. It’s for sure a reason that Palmer was cut from the team. Hülkenberg scored more points, had a higher average finishing position and out raced Palmer in more races. Hülkenberg was also far better with the pace, managing to out qualify Palmer in every single race that the duo participated in together.
Now, looking at Hülkenberg and Sainz presents some much more equal statistics, even though the pair only raced together in 4 races. Hülkenberg was able to score more points and was able to out qualify and out race Sainz in more events. However, this is to be expected while Sainz learned the Renault car. Next year will provide a much more accurate comparison of the two drivers.
