It has been reported that Pirelli will be introducing a new tyre compound for the 2018 season. The addition of the new dry tyre compound would mean that there would be six dry compounds available for teams. Some changes to the tyre allocation regulations are also rumored.
Pirelli is planning to introduce a sixth dry tyre compound that will be even softer than the newly added ultra soft compound, according to Auto Motor und Sport. The ultra soft was added in the 2016 tyre regulation overhaul.
It’s also been suggested that the rest of the compounds will also be softer than 2017. This could help the rapidly dying hard tyre compound, which the teams have only used once this season at the Spanish Grand Prix. With the new faster cars and higher downforce, the softer tyres are quickly becoming the preferred tyres.
Another rumored change to the 2018 F1 tyres includes a proposed open selection, meaning that the teams would be able to select any of the six dry compounds for their weekend allocation, rather than only the three compounds pre-determined by Pirelli for that circuit.
None of the above changes have been officially confirmed by Pirelli yet.
