It was announced at the Tokyo Motor Show that Nissan will be entering Formula-E for the 2018/2019 season, confirming that Renault will be parting ways with the sport. This may seem like news that is entirely unrelated to Formula One, but it means that the Renault F1 programme could be making big progress in future years.
Renault were heavily involved with both the financial and technical backing of the e.dams Formula E team. The team is known as the most successful team in the sport’s history, which started in 2014. They have two World Constructors’ Championship and one World Drivers’ Championship titles to their name.
Renault, the company that owns Nissan, has been looking to bring the Nissan name to Formula E. It would make only sense for Renault to leave once Nissan gets into the sport, since it wouldn’t make sense to have the same company competing against each other.
Renault already has their name in Formula One, which will get more attention from the company once they no longer have to focus on both Formula E and Formula One. Renault has been undergoing a big staff recruitment over the past year to get valuable staff that can help to boost their Formula One programme.
Renault leaving Formula E may be bad for e.dams, but good for the Renault F1 Team. E.dams will retain their entry into the 2018/2019 season, expected to become the Nissan e.dams team.
