The organizers of the United States Grand Prix are pushing to move the 2018 Mexican Grand Prix to a date further away from the 2018 United States Grand Prix. The organizers have suggested that the event is damaging their attendance and have said that the race would be better tied in with the Canadian Grand Prix.
Despite the FIA already creating a provisional schedule that keeps the United States Grand Prix and Mexican Grand Prix as back-to-back races, the event organizers are still pushing to have that changed in the future. The debate has been ongoing since the return of the Mexican Grand Prix in 2015, as the United States Grand Prix organizers believe that they are losing their Mexican fans, who would attend the race.
According to the United States Grand Prix event promoter Bobby Epstein, the fans from Mexico are now forced to choose between the two events and are choosing to attend the Mexican Grand Prix instead. He feels that the Mexican Grand Prix should be moved to June, so that it can be a back-to-back weekend with the Canadian Grand Prix. Meanwhile, the United States Grand Prix should be coupled with the Brazilian Grand Prix.
The choice to hold the race in the United States and the race in Mexico together is a major logistics strength for the teams, with just over 1,500km of roadway separating the circuits. Meanwhile the distance between the Circuit de Gilles Villeneuve in Canada and the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico is more than three times greater.
The event date is unlikely to change, considering the Mexican Grand Prix lines up just days before the annual Day of the Dead holiday, helping to boost tourism during that time. If anything, a more likely date change would be to move the United States Grand Prix to June with the Canadian Grand Prix, although the organizers of the United States Grand Prix are unlikely to give up their date so close to the end of the season.
