There has been a split opinion on the ‘Halo’ head protection system, set to be added to the cars in 2018. In their statement, the FIA described “repeated support” from the drivers and teams. With the mission of confirming this fact, Racing Clothesline contacted all of the teams about the introduction, which confirmed something else.
There have been varying reports about the introduction of the new system, with some sources saying that most of the teams were supporting it and others saying that only one team was supporting it. Of the teams on the grid, only two responded to Racing Clothesline’s request for information within 24 hours, with many others having read the email without replying.
Unfortunately, as noted by one of the two teams that replied to my request, the details of the Strategy Group meetings are confidential and cannot be shared with the press. This, understandably, means that none of the teams are going to share whether their team was for or against the introduction.
However, a high-level team could confirm that there was no team vote held and that it was the FIA that made the sole decision to implement the system in 2018. This further strengthens my argument I made yesterday.
The other team that replied to my request was also not willing to directly state their team’s stance on the topic, saying only that the team respected the decision made by the Strategy Group, also suggesting that they hadn’t helped make the decision.
