Daniel Ricciardo’s signature podium celebration could become a thing of the past, as the Australian racing driver suggests that the “shoey” celebration has run it’s course. Ricciardo has performed a shoey in all his five of his podium celebrations this season.
The 2016 German Grand Prix saw the now popular shoey, in which Ricciardo drinks from his racing boot. The shoey is an Australian tradition, celebrated by other racing drivers, with drivers like David Reynolds, Jack Miller and even Valentino Rossi taking part in the tradition.
Despite the popularity of the celebration, Ricciardo told the media at the British Grand Prix on Thursday that the shoey may be getting old and that he is prepared to stop the celebration. At the last two races in Azerbaijan and Austria, the shoey was brought on by fans and the podium interviewers, not Ricciardo himself.
The Australian has been asked to do a shoey outside of Formula One, with fans even shouting “shoey” at the F1 Live event in London on Wednesday. However, now that fans have become accustomed to this signature celebration, it may be a hard habit for the Red Bull driver to break, as he risks disappointing fans if he doesn’t do it.
If Ricciardo scores a podium finish at Silverstone this weekend, we’ll have to see whether the shoey celebration stays or goes.
