It would appear that Timo Glock could be preparing for a Formula One return, as the 35 year old posts that he has been contacted by a Formula One team, sharing an old photo from a seat fitting session during his Formula One career. But why has he been contacted by a team?
With the 2017 season already underway, all of the current seats of full and there aren’t really any teams that have expressed reasonable disappointment with their current driver. While some believe that Glock could be making a move to replace Jolyon Palmer at Renault or Lance Stroll at Williams, others are beginning to think that maybe Jenson Button has backed out of his one-off return to McLaren for the Monaco Grand Prix.
Glock made his Formula One debut at the end of the 2004 season, replacing Giorgio Pantano at Jordan. After a few races, it wasn’t until 2008 that we saw him back in a Formula One car, this time with Toyota for a full drive. Scoring a podium in his first season, he returned to the team the following season to score another two podium finishes. In 2010, he made the move to Virgin Racing. He remained with the team until his Formula One exit at the end of the 2012 season. After his Formula One career, he made the move to the DTM series, winning races.
On Monday, Timo Glock shared the following photo from a former seat fitting, announcing that he has been contacted by a Formula One team:
Some would say that the most reasonable explanation is that a team has contacted Glock about testing the car. However, the team next test isn’t until August in Hungary, which is a little far away. Also, Glock specifically uses the phrase “first race” in his Instagram post, narrowing down the possibility that he will be doing a test.
The most reasonable explanation at the moment may be that a team has contacted him about driving a car at the Goodwood Festival of Speed at the end of June and start of July. However, it would also be a stretch to call the Goodwood Festival of Speed a “race”, especially if Glock is just driving a show car.
So who has contacted Glock? According to Glock, talks are still ongoing, so only time will tell.
Timo Glock has since told the media that his posts were just a joke and that he will not be making an F1 return.
