Pascal Wehrlein has been medically cleared to take part in the second, and final, pre-season test before the 2017 season begins in Australia. The German driver sat out during the first test, causing him to miss his first driving opportunity with the new Sauber car.
It was a back injury sustained from his massive accident at the Race of Champions in Miami that prevented him from taking part in the first test. Sauber had said after the accident that the medical checks were ongoing and eventually confirmed that Ferrari reserve driver Antonio Giovinazzi would take Wehrlein’s place.
Having been present in the garage for the first pre-season test in order to get a feel for the team operations, Wehrlein will get behind the wheel for the Sauber C36 for the first time on Tuesday. Giovinazzi will remain on standby and ready to hope in the car should Wehrlein be unable to cope when he actually gets in the car.
