McLaren’s long time team manager, Dave Redding, has left the team to take a new job at Williams. Redding’s role as team manager will be filled by the team’s chief race mechanic.
Redding entered Formula One with Benetton in 1988. Seven years in his Formula One career, Redding was hired by McLaren as the number one mechanic. After 1997, he joined the new Stewart Grand Prix team, but made his return to McLaren at the start of the new century. Redding’s focus in the team was originally engineering, but he later transitioned into operational positions.
No official reason for Redding’s exit has been given, although it has happened at the start of a new post-Ron Dennis era for McLaren during which the team will massively restructure the team. Williams has also been doing some recruiting to help boost their 2017 campaign, having already taken Paddy Lowe from Mercedes.
Paul James, the team’s chief race mechanic, will be taking on Redding’s former roll. However, his focus will be solely on operations and management of the team, with the team’s sporting responsibilities and FIA communications having been given to the team’s head of race operations, Andrea Stella. Kari Lammenranta will be replacing James.
Redding’s exit happens just after the team also parted ways with Jost Capito, after failing to find common ground.
