Against the odds, Manor’s request to run their 2016 chassis for the opening rounds of the 2017 season has been approved by the FIA. This approval has extended the team’s time to find a new investor for the team.
As reported yesterday, Manor had submitted a request to the FIA for permission to run their 2016 chassis for the first few races of the season. This is despite the 2017 car ready and awaiting production, as the team’s administrators have prevented the team from spending more money.
Manor’s opportunity to have the 2017 car ready in time for the opening round of the season in Australia has lapsed, meaning that the team would need to skip the first few rounds of the season. Naturally, the team would have a better chance of getting a new investor onboard if they didn’t miss any races in 2017, so the team asked to run the 2016 chassis for the first three rounds of the season, a request which the BBC reports has already been approved by the FIA.
However, the team will not be permitted to run an “out of the box” version of the 2016 chassis. Instead the team will need to make a number of changes to the chassis in order to comply with the 2017 regulations. Due to the big changes to the regulations this upcoming season, there could be quite a number of changes in store for the car. However, on a positive note, the team will not be required to undergo the mandatory crash testing to run the 2016 chassis, as they have already done so last season.
As time runs down ahead of the 2017 season, the deadline to find an investor to take over the team. If the team cannot find someone before the start of the season, it is likely that the administrators will shut down the team. The administrators have agreed to pay employees up until the end of January. February wages have not been agreed upon yet, as some team members are being snatched up by Toro Rosso and Renault on conditional contracts.
