A difference in opinion among the management of the Renault F1 Team has resulted in Fred Vasseur stepping down from his position as Team Principal. Vasseur’s resignation is effective immediately, meaning that the team will need to find a new Team Principal for 2017.
Vasseur was recruited ahead of the 2016 season to help work on Renault’s new Formula One project. In July, Vasseur was promoted to the position of Team Principal. Prior to Formula One, Vasseur had a successful career at the team boss and co-founder of the ART team in the GP2 Series.
Vasseur blames conflicting opinions with the Renault management for his departure, although the decision was mutual. There has been some disagreement about the path that needs to be taken to enhance the team’s Formula One performance in the future. The team reportedly held a meeting after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix to discuss the future of the team, after which Vasseur took a couple of weeks off. Vasseur has told publications that he made the decision during the first week of January.
There is no word on what direction Vasseur’s career will take, although it will likely not be a position within Formula One. Work on the 2017 Renault F1 car is still underway, with the new racing machine set to be launched on February 21.
