Mercedes will have a lot of rebuilding to do over the winter break, as they will need to replace two high ranking team personnel. The first being Nico Rosberg, who shocked the Formula One world with his sudden retirement, and the second rumored to be Paddy Lowe, the team’s technical chief.
The latest reports reveal that Lowe has received an offer from a rival team to leave Mercedes. The 54 year old British engineer first entered into Formula One with Williams in 1987 to take a role as the Joint Head of Electronics. Since then he made his way to Mercedes, having also worked for McLaren for a decade.
Reports from various sources claim that Williams is the rival team that is attempting to recruit Lowe, although neither team has confirmed the situation. It is believed that Lowe could be joining the team in 2017 as part of a transition phase to take over Pat Symonds’ position as technical chief. The 63 year old is rumored to be retiring from Formula One at the end of 2017.
Lowe’s current contract with Mercedes expires on December 31 of this year. Should Lowe leave the team, it is believed that former technical director at Ferrari, James Allison, will be his replacement on Mercedes. Allison left Ferrari in July of this year, after a rumored falling out with the president, Sergio Marchionne.
