The Sauber F1 Team has extended the contract of Marcus Ericsson, meaning that he will be racing with the Swiss team for 2017. This will be the 26 year old’s third year with the team, since making the move from the bankrupt Caterham team at the end of 2014.

The team has went through a points drought, similar to the one that they had in 2014. The team was able to get their first points from Felipe Nasr at his home race. Ericsson has yet to score any points this season and compared to his teammate, he has scored less points for the team.

Monisha Kaltenborn, the Team Principal of Sauber, praised Ericsson for his contribution to the team and feels confident that he will help improve the team during the new era in 2017:

“During the current season Marcus has again showed he is willing to go that extra mile in order to make progress. He went through very difficult times with us, but managed those very well. In the last two years, he has made significant steps in regards to his personal development, proving his skills on as well as off track, especially when circumstances are not easy. He is not only a good driver, but also an important team player who understands how to work with the team and how to motivate everyone with his positive attitude.”

Sauber is the only team, other than Manor, that does not yet have a full driver lineup confirmed. Felipe Nasr has still not been confirmed with the team, as reported sponsorship issues have held up the deal. However, Pascal Wehrlein has been heavily linked to the team, as he may be forced out of Manor if they need to acquire a pay-driver for the 2017 season. This would see Nasr replaced by Wehrlein, who has heavy financial backing from Mercedes.

As the 2016 season rapidly approaches its end, the team promised a second driver announcement in due course.
