It’s now officially November, which means it’s the time of year where many men take part in Movember. Movember, sometimes referred to as No-Shave November, is an awareness campaign that takes place in various countries around the globe where men grow mustaches to “change the face of men’s health”. In honor of the annual event, here are five memorable mustaches in Formula One history.
Mansell has done plenty of racing during his career, but one of the things that people remember about him is his fabulous mustache. During his racing career, with was rare to see him at the circuit without his facial hair, which almost resembles that of American actor Tom Selleck. The start of the 1988 season was one of the only times where Mansell was inside of a Formula One car without iconic ‘stache. Although he decided has decided to ditch the facial hair after retiring from Formula One in 1995, it remains a memorable part of his career and appearance.
Graham Hill was born into the era of the mustache. There were a few other drivers with facial hair at the time, but none are as remembered as Hill’s classic pencil mustache. His painter’s brush made him look more like a pilot than a Formula One driver, which perhaps makes some sense since he was a pilot. There’s not a moment in his career that he didn’t have the hair above his lips. Perhaps it made him faster in some way, although I think that today’s aerodynamicists would say otherwise.
Although Mallya has rarely been spotted with just a mustache, few facial hair styles can compete with Mallya’s. When he first appeared in the Formula One world, he was seen sporting a goatee. However, his style has evolved in recent years and he has converted his facial hair into a mustache with chin fluff. Although his style has changed throughout the years, it’s safe to say that it’s difficult to picture him without his iconic and memorable mustache.
Known as Formula One’s original “Flying Finn”, Keke Rosberg is also known for his classic ‘80s look: Big aviators; Long hair; And a blonde mustache. Unfortunately, as the years moves on, the ‘80s look became less popular and Keke was forced to convert his mustache into more of a full beard. Even more unfortunately, his son Nico has never replicated his father’s mustache for any serious period of time.
If you were to simply mention his name to any Formula One fan, they would likely have no clue who you are talking about. However, if you show them his photo, they will instantly know. Jimmy isn’t a team owner or a racing driver, but he is a familiar face around the F1 scene. He is the Mercedes F1 team’s Composite Inspector and happens to have one of the greatest mustaches in the world!
