One week ago, Lewis Hamilton was absent for the Pirelli tyre test due to a foot injury. Hamilton has revealed during the Thursday press conference in the United States that he has been battling this injury throughout the entire season.
Lewis Hamilton explained his foot pain when asked about it during Thursday’s press conference for the United States Grand Prix:
“I am 100 per cent, yeah, feeling great. I basically had an injury that I’ve been carrying generally all year long, in both feet. Just induced by running. Unfortunately the physio said that it just takes a lot of stretching and it just heals over a long time. At the time I woke up in the morning, I was feeling quite a lot of pain the day before, and it hadn’t diminished, so there was very little… the most important thing was to be fresh for here and feeling better for here. This is actually the first week that it’s felt good.”
Having missed the Pirelli test, Hamilton has still not used next year’s tyres. Some people are dismissing Hamilton’s claims, saying that he is only attempting to use this injury as a scapegoat to explain the loss his World Drivers’ Championship lead.
All athletes, including Formula One drivers, can suffer long term injuries from participating in the sport. Muscle strain and disc damage are among the injuries that can be found in some retired athletes. Common among racing drivers would be back injuries caused by stress on the back and neck area while seated in an unnatural position.
