The Automobile Club d’Italia is looking to sign an agreement with Formula One to host the Italian Grand Prix at the Autodromo Nazionale Monza. If it is signed, the agreement would mean that the race will be in Monza for an additional three seasons, therefore putting a hold on Imola’s recent F1 bid.
The F1 teams are in Italy this weekend, for what many believe may be the final Italian Grand Prix in Monza, as the Autodromo Nazionale Monza’s F1 contract expires after this event. There has been a level of uncertainty surrounding the event, as the threat of the Italian Grand Prix disappearing from the Formula One calendar is present.
In mid-July, the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari reportedly signed a contract with Bernie Ecclestone to host the Italian Grand Prix 2017, but it needed to be approved by the ACI before Ecclestone could sign it. The circuit, often referred to as Imola, is well known in Formula One for being the previous host of the San Marino Grand Prix up until it was removed from the calendar in 2007. Imola expressed a deep interest in hosting the event and even announced that they would file an appeal in the courts in order to stop the ACI from unfairly favouring Monza.
However, it appears that Monza will still be hosting the Italian Grand Prix next season, as the ACI has reportedly reached a 68 million agreement with the sport. Although the final details of the contract are still being finalized by a team of lawyers, the ACI hopes that they will be able to officially announce the contract during this weekend’s Italian Grand Prix.
The agreement will reportedly see Monza host the Italian Grand Prix from 2017 to 2019. The Italian Grand Prix has been held every single season in Formula One history. Monza has hosted every single Italian Grand Prix except for the 1980 event, for which Imola was the host.
