Kevin Magnussen was the victim of a massive accident this weekend, as he lost control of his Renault on Eau Rouge. The heavy impact resulted in a red flag, while trackside workers made the necessary repairs to the barriers. Magnussen was able to walk away from the accident and was transported to a nearby hospital for examination.
The incident occurred on lap six on the exit of Eau Rouge. Magnussen was able to take a near-perfect line through Eau Rouge, but when he got on the left-hand side kerb he lost rear grip and sent the car into a skid. He attempted to correct it, but the car snapped back in the other direction and slammed into the tyre barrier on the right-hand side.
The car hit a barrier protecting the safety access road in reverse and then the car slapped around into a second barrier almost head-on. The impact was enough to break off the head rest and fling it at the barriers. Magnussen was able to exit from the vehicle with some minor assistance from the marshals. The red flag lasted nearly 20 minutes.
According to the Renault team boss, Fred Vasseur, Magnussen escaped with a small cut on his left ankle. He also says that Magnussen has been x-rayed, but there are no major injuries to report.
