Mercedes was summoned to see the stewards for an incident that occurred during the final free practice session on Saturday. The team was under investigation for unsafe release and received a fine, while Lewis Hamilton escaped reprimand.
During free practice three, Mercedes engineers released Lewis Hamilton from the garage directly in the path of Romain Grosjean’s Haas. The Frenchman was forced to come to a full stop in order to avoid making contact with the World Drivers’ Championship leader.
Following an investigation into the incident, the team admitted that they had released Hamilton into unsafe conditions. The stewards made the decision to only punish the team with the €10,000 fine. Hamilton received no punishment or fine.
Hamilton is already skating on thin ice this season, having already had two reprimands. If the Brit would have been given a reprimand for this incident, it would have resulted in a ten-place grid penalty. Hamilton’s season is already overshadowed with future grid penalties, as the Brit has used his power unit allocation for the season after some issues earlier in the season which resulted in multiple power unit changes.
