The results for this year’s British Grand Prix are now finalized, following Mercedes’ decision not to proceed with their appeal against Nico Rosberg’s penalty. The penalty sees Rosberg fall from P2 to P3 and allows Max Verstappen to jump one position.

Following an investigation by the stewards after the British Grand Prix, it was decided that Nico Rosberg and Mercedes were in violation of the FIA’s radio clampdown regulations when they advised him on how to deal with a gearbox issue that he had developed near the closing stages of the race. The penalty for the infraction was a ten second time penalty for Rosberg, meaning that he lost a position to Max Verstapppen. Shortly after the decision, Mercedes announced that they would file an appeal against the penalty, in an attempt to have Rosberg’s race result reinstated.

The team had until Thursday to decide whether to proceed with the appeal, but they opted on Monday to withdraw their appeal from the FIA, thus accepting the steward’s decision and the associated penalty. As recently reported by Racing Clothesline, the appeal would have most likely been denied, as the current sporting regulations within Formula One prevent teams from appealing certain penalties.

However, Mercedes has announced that they will have discussions with the sport’s stakeholders in the coming weeks about the over-regulation of Formula One and possible regulation changes. The FIA’s radio clampdown was announced at the start of the season and has since been heavily criticized by fans and experts.

As a result of the British Grand Prix, Nico Rosberg now leads the World Drivers’ Championship by only a single point over his teammate.
