The tyre failure occurred on the front straight when Vettel began his 26th lap and his right-rear tyre exploded. Vettel lost control of his Ferrari and it was sent into the barrier, damaging the car so that he could not continue the race. The track was littered with debris and the safety car was deployed so that the marshals could safely clean up the pieces of rubber.

Following Pirelli’s investigation into the issue, the Italian tyre manufacturer has revealed that a piece of debris is the blame for the blowout. The company determined the cause of the issue by inspecting the remaining rubber from Vettel’s damaged tyre, while also taking a close look at the other tyres used in the race. This rules out fatigue or structural failure as the cause of the incident.
