The change was made Friday evening when Ferrari mechanics found metal filings in the gearbox from the European Grand Prix. Under the regulations, changes to the power unit components during the race weekend results in a grid penalty for the driver. The FIA has awarded Vettel a five-place grid penalty for the violation.

Both drivers will also start the race with a new internal combustion engine, as the team opt to swap the component overnight. The team have used a power unit token on some technical changes to the ICE system. This leaves the team with only three engine development tokens in the season.
