Tim Malyon will be leaving Sauber at the end of the month, just over three months into the job. He was given the position of Sauber’s head of track engineering in January.
When Sauber’s engineer, Giampaolo Dall’Ara, left the team prior to the 2016 season after more than 15 years with the Swiss team, the team called upon Tim Malyon. Malyon had been an employee of Red Bull Racing since 2005, climbing his way up to the position of Race Engineer in charge of car performance.
However, the Chinese Grand Prix was Malyon’s last race, as he departs from the team after only three months of work. He will not be at the Russian Grand Prix and is officially off of the team by the end of the month. Racing Clothesline has been in contact with a representative of Sauber, but they were not able to reveal his exact reason for leaving the team, saying simply that he was leaving for private reasons.
The team has promoted Paul Russell to the position as the head of track engineering. Russell has been with the Swiss team since 1997, acting as Felipe Nasr’s race engineer recently. However, Sauber specified that the change is only temporary.
Malyon’s departure is the third high-profile departure for the team in 2016. Giampaolo Dall’Ara and Mark Smith, the team’s technical director, both left the team just prior to the start of the season.
