As 21 of the drivers enjoy a relaxing weekend without a Formula One race, Daniel Ricciardo decides to enter a special event in Monaco. The event was not open to the public and was by invitation only.
The Red Bull driver, Daniel Ricciardo, received his special invitation earlier in the week when he was challenged to a race by the son of Felipe Massa. Felipinho challenged the Australian to a 10 lap go-kart race around the patio of Massa’s Monaco house. Ricciardo accepted the challenge via Instagram, saying: “The amount of smack he talks has gotten out of control. I have accepted his go kart challenge and will be bringing all the [fire] I have!”
The race was streamed live on Felipe Massa’s Facebook page and in-race commentary was provided by Felipe. There were no odd or confusing qualifying formats, as a round of rock-paper-scissors would decide which driver started on the inside line. Ricciardo was victorious in the rock-paper-scissors match, but that would be the only victory that he would see in this race, as Felipinho piloted his kart to victory.
Ricciardo was given the second place medal, while Felipinho was given the coveted winner trophy. Both drivers celebrated the race with the traditional spraying of the champagne (water). “The little man showed me how it’s done,” Ricciardo joked. “I’m saying home court advantage got me beat.”
Ricciardo may have just had a glimpse of a future Formula One competitor. Both Felipe Massa and Daniel Ricciardo will return to the proper circuit on the weekend of May 1 for the Russian Grand Prix.
