The FIA has allowed Fernando Alonso to take part in the Chinese Grand Prix, despite not having all of the required documents. The stewards have overlooked this and decided to allow him to take part in the race, although he will be subject to some more tests.

Following his horrific accident in the Australian Grand Prix, it was discovered that Alonso had suffered fractured ribs and a minor collapsed lung. For those injuries, the FIA did not clear Alonso to participate in the Bahrain Grand Prix, allowing Stoffel Vandoorne to take over the McLaren for the weekend.

On Thursday, Alonso was provisionally allowed to participate in the weekend. This was a lengthy decision since Alonso was missing a key document that’s required when a driver is incapacity for ten days or more. Since Alonso’s recovery did not fall strictly within the FIA regulations, the race stewards relied on advice from the FIA Medical Delegate who has consulted with the Chief Medical Officer of the Chinese Grand Prix.

Alonso will need to undergo further medical examinations following the first free practice sessions to ensure that he completely fit to race and that there is no medical risk. That will occur on Friday, but it is expected that Alonso will pass the examination.
