Kevin Magnussen will be forced to start the race from the pitlane on Sunday, after the FIA slammed him with a penalty. The violation happened during free practice two.
The stewards found that Kevin Magnussen was in violation of Article 29.1 in the FIA Sporting Regulations, a regulation regarding random car weighing. The regulation states that drivers will be randomly summoned to the FIA’s garage (the first garage in the pitlane) so that they can be weighed to ensure that they comply with the sport’s strict technical regulations. Drivers are signaled by a light at the start of the pitlane and must proceed directly to the FIA garage.
While following the Red Bull of Daniil Kvyat into the pitlane, Magnussen was signaled via the light to enter the FIA garage. Because he was following the Red Bull, Renault was unsure which driver was required to be weighed. Kvyat proceeded to the FIA garage instead of Magnussen.
According to the regulations, if Renault had returned the car to the FIA garage in a timely manner and without performing any work on the car, they could have escaped with only a reprimand. However, the team failed to return the car to the FIA garage and had performed work on it. Therefore, under the regulations, the car must now start the race from the pitlane.
