Following his accident in the final day of the first Barcelona test, Fernando Alonso missed the final pre-season test of 2015. He spent the night in hospital under a doctor’s supervision, as per the protocols. Early on, it was announced by McLaren that he would be ok to race in the first race of the season at Australia, as he would have recovered from his concussion by then. However, this is no longer the case.
In a medical update released by McLaren, it states that Fernando Alonso has been put through a series of test by doctors and that he appears to have recovered from the concussion he had received as a result of the accident. The statement went on to say that Alonso was told by doctors that he should:
“…seek to limit as far as is possible any environmental risk factors that could potentially result in his sustaining another concussion so soon after his previous one, so as to minimise the chances of second impact syndrome, as is normal medical procedure when treating athletes after concussions.”
In order to do so, it was confirmed that the Spaniard will not compete in the first race of the season in Australia. In his place, the team’s test driver, Kevin Magnussen, has been called up again. According to the team and doctors, Alonso should be able to race in the second race of the season in Malaysia. I’m sure I speak for many people when I wish Fernando Alonso a speedy and full recovery. I look forward to seeing him back in the car for the Malaysian Grand Prix.
